Moving to A New House? Change Your Locks!

Updated: Mar 27, 2023

Amidst everything else you must do when moving into a new home, changing the locks can feel like just one chore too many. However, it is essential that changing the locks is first on your priority list, as recommended by our locksmiths in Kettering.

Did you know you’re almost twice as likely to be burgled in the first year after you move into a new home than at any other time and almost three times as likely to be burgled than someone who has been settled in their property for over a decade?

On top of that, households that have taken no security measures or set in place any deterrents are an alarming ten times more likely to be burgled.

According to national statistics, around 37,500 properties will change hands every year with at least one set of spare keys remaining with a third party. With almost 60% of the population giving out a spare key to their home, it’s unsurprising that many don’t make it back into the hands of the owners to be passed over to you as the new owner.

This is a problem particularly in rental accommodation, where spare keys are often given out, but a higher percentage are never recovered.

Another survey found that 12 million adults have lost their keys more than 6 times in the last ten years, alongside identification details, and still did not change their locks.

You should also consider that many insurance policies with stipulate that if you don’t change your locks upon moving into a new property then you cannot claim after a burglary, as your insurance will be void.

By now, we hope that the relatively simple procedure of changing your locks is looking less like an inconvenience and more like a good idea. Our DBS checked and fully certified locksmiths in Kettering adhere to the British Locksmith Standard, meaning that you can rest assured your home is better secured.
